What to Do if You Have Postpartum Hair Loss

For many new mothers, the joy of welcoming a baby can be tempered by unexpected changes to their body—one of the most common being postpartum hair loss. After giving birth, it's normal to experience shedding as the body adjusts, but the amount of hair loss can sometimes be concerning. Fortunately, postpartum hair loss is temporary, and there are several steps you can take to manage it and promote hair regrowth.

What Causes Postpartum Hair Loss?

During pregnancy, increased levels of estrogen extend the hair’s growth phase, resulting in thicker, fuller locks. However, after childbirth, hormone levels return to normal, causing more hair to enter the shedding phase. This shedding, known as telogen effluvium, typically occurs between one and six months postpartum, with most women noticing the peak around the three-month mark.

While this process is natural and temporary, it can be distressing, especially when large clumps of hair fall out during brushing or washing. The good news is that in most cases, your hair will return to its normal growth cycle within 6 to 12 months.

Tips to Manage Postpartum Hair Loss

Be Gentle with Your Hair

One of the easiest ways to manage postpartum hair loss is by being gentle with your hair. Avoid hairstyles that pull on the hair, such as tight ponytails, buns, or braids, as these can cause additional stress and breakage. Opt for loose styles and use a wide-tooth comb to detangle your hair. Also, avoid heat styling tools and harsh chemical treatments, as they can further weaken your hair.

Eat a Balanced Diet

Nutrition plays a key role in hair health. Ensure your diet includes a variety of nutrient-rich foods that promote hair growth, such as leafy greens, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Foods high in vitamins A, C, D, and E, as well as zinc, iron, and biotin, are particularly beneficial for hair health. Consider speaking with a healthcare professional about taking a multivitamin or prenatal vitamin, especially if you're breastfeeding.

Reduce Stress

While it’s easier said than done, reducing stress can help with postpartum hair loss. Stress can exacerbate the shedding process, so finding ways to relax and care for yourself is essential. Try mindfulness practices like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises to manage stress.
